My name is Alejandro. I work at a shelter for youths facing homelessness, and my position there is the life skills coordinator.
On a weekly basis, Sid comes in and facilitates a wonderful program called “Young People’s Writing Room”.
This program is delivered in two week intervals with the first week being dedicated solely to brainstorming ideas and creating themes, settings, characters, and plots. After the brainstorming session is completed, Sid takes all of these ideas home and somehow creates an exciting, cohesive and compelling screenplay that incorporates all of the concepts we created as a team.
The second week is then dedicated to reading the script out loud to see how our story turned out.
The Young People’s Writing Room is personally my favourite program that we facilitate at my shelter. It allows our youths to freely express themselves and all of their ideas, and gives them an immense sense of pride getting to see how their ideas turn out.
Sid is an excellent program facilitator who manages to connect with each of our youths, tap into their creative side and encourages them to share as much as possible, but he’s never intrusive about it. He’s incredibly kind, witty and unbelievably creative. His ability to connect with people at my shelter is always something I’ve appreciated about him from the first day I met him. I hope this partnership sticks around for a long time!

I have worked with Aakowa as an illustrator and it has been a great experience for me to explore different perspectives. His stories take me to places where I wouldn't be able to go otherwise. My view was expanded through working with him.

My session on The Aakowa Parables allowed me to share my experience of someone who is of Caribbean heritage and connect it with my African lineage. The session was quite timely as I had just came back from visiting the African continent for the first time and being able to share the similarities and differences between the two cultures. Our discussion was honest and generated curiosity and connection between the two groups with the main focus on the importance of family and community.

Working with Aakowa was an absolute pleasure. As an artist lead, he brought exceptional creativity, dedication, and leadership to our project. His ability to craft compelling narratives, engage deeply with the local community, and inspire young people was truly amazing. Aakowa not only led rehearsals with precision and care but also created impactful soundscapes that enriched the overall artistic vision. His collaborative spirit and professionalism made him a joy to work with, and I would highly recommend him to any organization seeking a passionate and talented creative leader.
